Analysis of conventions of short films

INSIDE -

One short film convention that is used in the film is the characters as you can see at 3:00 that they are different characters on the screen. Many of the characters are there to show that the main character is suffering from a split personality and also that all these characters that we are seeing are just created in his head. This convention is effective because it tells the audience that the main character is in a mental institution.

Another convention is a twist in the short film is the women that the main character is talking to probably his therapist at 4:43 was just another voice that he has created inside his head. The director effectively has used this convention because the audience didn't see it coming because they would have though an actual person was trying to help him but instead, she was just a figment of his imagination.

The lighting in this short film (at 0:39) is always in a low-key lighting showing that the film has a lot of suspense.  It shows how dark the mental institution and how gloomy everything is, showing that the main character isn't pleased on where he is and that the voices in his head are driving him crazy. This is effective because it's showing the audience that it is not going to be an exciting, happy film.

Another convention is themes. This short film there are themes like mystery and suspense. At 0.54 the audience can see that the main character is walking with multiple people that he wasn't walking with a second before making the audience a little confused but then they realise that they are his multiple personalities. The director has effectively used this convention and has impacted the viewer because the audience would want to know what's going to happen next.

The short film is dark and in a low-key lighting. The setting is in a mental institution, showing that there is no other4 people in the ward except for the main character and the people that are working there which is indicating to the audience that this place is for the main character because he has different personalities. The director has used this convention and made an impact on the viewers by showing the mental institution is a place with nothing there except for a table and chairs for the main character and the evaluator. Its showing how this place could be considered a prison.

LIGHTS OUT -

At 0.15 you can see that there is only one character in this short film. Since this is a horror film this is more terrifying because there is only one person. The director has effectively used this convention and made an impact on the audience because since there is only one character that is dealing with something uncanny in her house, the audience will feel more scared for her.

Another convention of this short film is a twist. At 2.29 there is a jump scare of a something scary. The director effectively used this convention and has impacted the viewers because near the end of the short film when the main character is pulling the blanket off her head because she can't hear anything, for a few seconds there isn't anything then randomly something pops up scaring the main character and the audience.

The lighting in this film is also low-key lighting because this is showing that this short film is a horror film. The director effectively used this convention and has made an impact on its viewers because since everything in this film is mostly in a low-key lighting that makes everything eerie, and it's expected to make the audience feel a little weary on what's going to happen next.

Another convention in this short film is suspense. At 0.17 when she's turning the lights on and off. The director has effectively used this convention and has made an impact in its viewers because when the main character is turning on and off her lights, there is this weird shadow of something and every time she turns it on and off it comes closer and closer. Which is giving the audience suspense and they would want to know what's going to happen next.

The setting in this short film is just a normal house with a single person living in it. With props like chair, tables, bed and a couch just like in a normal living room environment. The director effectively has used this convention and has an impact on its viewers because the audience can see that this is just a normal person in a regular household and that makes the audience feel more sympathetic towards this character.

POST IT LOVE -

The setting in this film is the office which is usually common in short films that are related to work. This is effective because it lets the audience know where it takes place and its cut because it's a romance in the work place.

The lighting in this film is high-key lighting showing that the short film is bright, colourful and cheery. The director effectively used that convention and the impact that it shows to its viewers is that a carefree cute romance story between two people in work that express their feelings with post it notes.

Another convention is a twist in this short film. At 2.27 the male main character does this great gesture with the post it notes. The director effectively has used that convention and has impacted the viewers because when the audience and the main female character sees this big post it note masterpiece they feel in aww and would have butterflies since its so cute.

This film has a theme of romance. This short film has a romance theme at 0.30 onwards the audience can see that the two main characters are in sync and fro 0:40 they both try to catch each others looking at the same time. The director has used this to allow the audience to see that this is about romance and that the two workers are clearly trying to get each others attention.

Another convention is the characters. You can see that in this short film that there is only two characters throughout. The director has effectively used this convention and has impacted its viewers because this short film is showing the romance between the two people.
